Mapping Cusco’s Textile Revitalization Movement

October 25 – 27, 2019

Co-facilitators: Ashli Atkins & Steve DeRoy

Co-hosted by: The Firelight Group & Mosqoy

Location: Huarán, Sacred Valley, Peru

What is the Peru IMW about?

This workshop is part of Ashli Akins’ doctoral research project, which explores the safeguarding of the Quechua textile tradition in an era of rapid economic change.

As part of this project, Ashli is mapping authentic retail outlets across the Cusco region that allow consumers to directly buy from and support textile artists. This workshop allows all leaders, promoters, and weavers involved in the movement to contribute to this map, as well as learn new mapping skills to tell their own stories about the textile tradition – the process, dyes, symbols, land use, etc.

What do you want to tell the world? What do you want to document or archive for your own community? This workshop offers new skills and resources to allow community members to create their very own maps and stories.

Who is the Peru IMW for?

This workshop is for community members, weavers, promoters, and leaders of Cusco’s textile revitalization movement, as well as students and other allies who may assist in the promotion and revitalization of the Quechua textile tradition through mapping and storytelling.

The workshop is highly competitive with limited seating, so will be offered through an application process.

The workshop will be offered in Quechua, Spanish, and English. It will be accessible to all participants, regardless of technological abilities and access.
