In this session we’ll focus on the technical skills and best practices of mapping Indigenous knowledge and traditional land use with Google Earth using the Direct-to-Digital method. We’ll introduce you to Google Earth and cover the basics of how to create a simple 3D map with all the feature types – points, lines, and polygons – for mapping Indigenous knowledge and traditional land use. You’ll learn how to plan your interview, what questions you might ask, what equipment you’ll need to bring and more.

    Raleigh works with Indigenous communities and non-profits to use Google geospatial tools to visualize data, create maps, and tell stories. She has been at Google for 10 years. Before life at Google, Raleigh managed international exchange programs at the non-profit American Councils for International Education in Washington, DC, taught English and trained teachers as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer in Ukraine, and studied cultural anthropology at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.

    Tara is Kanien’kéha from Mohawk Nation at Ahkwesáhsne. She works at Google Canada in Waterloo, as an Admin Business Partner. She is part of the Google American Indian Network and Google's First Nations Group. Tara holds a degree in Indigenous Studies from Laurentian University, and is currently doing post-grad studies at University of Waterloo. Her work on diversity at Google has focused solely on Indigenous work, including mapping, education, language, inclusion, and community outreach.
