Event Details

SIKU: the Indigenous Knowledge Social Network, is a web and mobile platform that provides tools and services for Indigenous communities to lead their own research and monitoring programs using their own knowledge systems in a safe space that respects full data ownership, access and privacy. Providing a GPS, map layers and easy ways to document observations on the land when away from internet, as well as online tools for project management, SIKU helps empower communities with the data that has always been a part of Indigenous knowledge systems.

This session will highlight several case studies showing how SIKU and over 13,000 northern users are supporting Guardians programs, recording baseline data for protected areas, and documenting large-scale climate change processes on maps and time series data. The session will also provide an introduction to how to use the SIKU mobile apps to document land use observations and tag them with Indigenous environmental terminology. A complimentary session is recommended for those who want to take a deeper dive on SIKU’s project management tools and advanced maps and mapping features.
