Why do I keep getting directed to sign-up for the Indigenous Mapping Collective when I try to register for 2021IMW?

The Indigenous Mapping Collective is the home of 2021IMW. To attend the event you must be registered on the Indigenous Mapping Collective. The Collective is a global network of Indigenous mappers from all levels of experience. We host a monthly speaker’s series on the Collective and provide on-demand training through this platform. This virtual space also allows Indigenous mappers to connect with each other, trainers, and speakers throughout the year to ask questions, share opportunities and projects with each other.

What is the Indigenous Mapping Collective?

The Indigenous Mapping Collective is a virtual platform and the home of 2021IMW. The Collective allows Indigenous mappers to connect with each other and have premier access to mapping resources and at all times. For the first time ever, you can revisit IMW at your own pace. We welcome members from all skill levels to join the Collective.

Do I need to have mapping experience to participate in 2021IMW?

Not at all! We welcome everyone from all skill levels to attend the Indigenous Mapping Workshop. Our goal for this event is to build capacity among Indigenous Nations, peoples, and organizations so that Indigenous stories can be shared and preserved. We know these tools can be used for the promotion of Indigenous rights and interests and want to provide a number of educational resources so that you can decide which mapping technologies work best for you and your projects.

Why did I not receive an email from you? I registered for 2021IMW.

We’ve streamlined the process of registration this year to make it easier and less time-consuming for participants and have decided not to email participants this year for confirmation of registration. You are automatically registered when you click ‘RSVP’ on the event 2021 Indigenous Mapping Workshop: Turtle Island.

For all other individuals wishing to participate in 2021IMW, pricing will follow the pricing model that has been set for the Indigenous Mapping Collective. This allows us to build more content, reach out to new partners, and build capacity for even more people. How do you determine which pricing category I belong to?

To determine the pricing category you belong to, check here. We strive to make our pricing model equitable for each sector.

Why do I have to pay for a membership if I’m not Indigenous?

The Indigenous Mapping Workshop was created for Indigenous peoples, Nations, and organizations to ensure they have access to the tools and knowledge to be able build capacity with mapping technologies. This knowledge is critical for Indigenous peoples to share their stories and for Indigenous Nations to exercise their rights. Paid memberships allow us to build more content, reach out to new partners, and build capacity among even more people.

Can I cancel my membership after the workshop ends?

Yes! You can cancel your membership on the Indigenous Mapping Collective at any time. New members get a one-month free trial to the Collective.

When will the event schedule be released?

Stay tuned! A full event schedule is coming this September.

Do I need to download Zoom to attend the conference?

Participants are highly encouraged to download the Zoom desktop or mobile app for attending sessions. However, those who are unable to install Zoom can join a meeting or webinar using the Zoom web client on their desktop web browser. Know that the Zoom web client offers limited functionality.

Are there going to be more opportunities to connect with other participants this year?

Yes! We heard your feedback from last year’s event and want to open up space for folks to connect more with speakers, trainers, and each other in the virtual space. Stay tuned for more updates about our networking sessions!

Are future IMW events going to be held in person?

Yes! Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic is still an ongoing risk and as such, we made the decision to host the workshop online again this year. In future years we would love to host a hybrid event of online and in-person content.

Do I have to participate every day?

Since the workshop is online, participants can join sessions around their own schedule. Feel free to pop in and out of the workshop as you need. All sessions will be recorded and can be accessed on-demand.

Is training offered in languages other than English?

Yes! Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic is still an ongoing risk and as such, we made the decision to host the workshop online again this year. In future years we would love to host a hybrid event of online and in-person content.
